Shobhna Padhiar: Volunteer, Milton Keynes

Hi, I’m Nisha

I have worked in the NHS since I was 18-years old, going into the profession after experiencing the NHS’s quick actions and support when my father had to have a life-saving operation. I am eternally grateful to the NHS, and I feel that as I have been given the gift of knowledge and education; I owe it to the NHS to give something back.  My background is as a Pharmacy Manager where I would prepare cancer drugs, and most recently I worked as an NHS Project Manager. I also volunteer as a reservist on the wards to apportion in patients.

During the pandemic, we were asked to improvise by starting and managing a PPE service at MKUH. We had some very challenging days where stocks ran low and guidelines were changing daily, but we had committed to providing a 7-day service to the hospital, so we were determined to see this through. Once we opened the vaccine centre at MKUH, I volunteered to help and I am so glad that I did as it gave me the opportunity to meet many other volunteers from all different backgrounds and professions. I was very proud when my daughter who is a 4th year medical student also volunteered – we were preparing COVID vaccines working side-by-side. Everyone coming to be vaccinated was so grateful, and for some, it was the first time they had left the house in months.  I am proud of the work we all accomplished, I am proud to have been able to help so many people and I am thankful to all the other key workers for the work that they did too.

One of the most cherished things that I can take from the pandemic is when I met one of the ITU team who was feeling very overwhelmed, so I stayed with her and listened, which made her feel better and enabled her to continue doing her work – we have stayed friends ever since. I was able to help because I am motivated, and my faith, my family, my dog and my lovely long walks all help me to carry on.

We're all connected; to Her Majesty the Queen; to each other; to the past, present and future
