Lynsey Marriott: Transport/Deliver Driver/Post Office Worker/Shop/Retail, Milton Keynes
Hi, I’m Lynsey
Knowing that I can make people’s lives that little bit easier is what truly inspires me. As the Community Champion at Morrisons, I am very proud of our unsold food programme where we are able to support food banks, schools, community groups and community fridges in Milton Keynes. We saved over 15 tonnes of unsold food last year, and every bit of that went to those who really needed it. The programme is very beneficial for the environment too as wasted food doesn’t end up in landfills.
The whole team at our Morrisons store pulls together to help the community. My most memorable moment to date is when a school receptionist got in touch to ask if we could help one of their families. The family had no gas or electricity, they were being evicted from their home and the children had gone to school hungry, extremely upset, and tired. We managed to get them some food and vouchers to last them until the council could re-home them – it was a lovely feeling, knowing that we had helped just a little. The thought that you could be the reason that a child eats that day really inspires me and gives me the strength to carry on.
The pandemic made countless people from the community very scared, some lost their jobs and homes, and many were unsure about their futures. My workload tripled overnight, and I saw first-hand what a detrimental effect COVID was having on so many people. It was an awful time, but knowing that we could, and were, making a difference to the lives of our community was wonderful.
